Bordeaux : a vineyard whose expertise is always on the move

Bordeaux is rethinking its entire approach to viticulture in order to adapt to a changing climate: pruning dates, trunk height, canopy management, cover crops, harvest timing, whole‑cluster vinifications, and the widespread adoption of parcel‑by‑parcel sorting.

There is also a strong desire to (re)establish positive natural balances in the vineyard: agroforestry, biodiversity‑friendly practices, and mixed ecosystems are increasingly part of the landscape.

Some estates are going further still, using sensors and drones to monitor vine health in real time, anticipate water stress or disease pressure, and adjust interventions with a precision that was unimaginable only a decade ago.

What innovations are happening in the winery ?

Bordeaux is living through a remarkable technical moment. Modern approaches to vinification and ageing open new possibilities while enabling a thoughtful return to certain traditional methods.
Examples include whole‑berry or parcel‑by‑parcel fermentations, low‑ or no‑sulphur vinification, optical berry sorting, cold soaks, and gravity‑flow systems designed to move the wine gently. Traditional ageing is now complemented by innovative vessels, while some producers revisit ancestral materials such as large foudres, demi‑muids, amphorae, or concrete eggs.

Automated controls for temperature and humidity ensure stable, homogeneous fermentations. Micro‑oxygenation, gentle filtration, and fermentations with indigenous yeasts — among others — help refine aromatic complexity and express the individuality of each cuvée.

Innovation also extends to traceability and communication. Digital tools allow producers to share the full story of each wine — from vine to bottle — strengthening transparency and reinforcing the connection with the region’s appellations. Apps and interactive platforms bring audiences closer to the craftsmanship behind Bordeaux wines.
